Surge of squirrels in Hampstead and Highgate

Posted by news desk in Local News, 3rd July 2008, 3:19pm

The rise in number of grey squirrels in the local area is putting Hampstead and Highgate trees at risk.

By stripping bark from trunks and branches, the rodents are causing potentially deadly damage to mature trees on the Heath and in Highgate Wood.

Experts have not been able to offer a certain explanation for the surge in squirrel numbers, but their effect is clear to see.

The English Heritage has said that it will monitor and manage the escalating problem.
