Britten's Cello Symphony - Brent Symphony Orchestra
On Saturday 27 March at 7.30pm. Venue is St James' Church, Sherriff Road, West Hampstead NW6 2AP.
Brent Symphony Orchestra welcomes back Jonathan Ayling for a performance of Britten's Cello Symphony, one of a series of works written for the great Russian cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich which marked Britten's return to symphonic writing. Verdi's Force of Destiny overture is the perfect curtain raiser and the concert will close with Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.
Brent Symphony Orchestra is London’s oldest amateur orchestra, having existed under several names but continuously since 1911. The orchestra has been associated with many famous names in classical music over the years, including soloists Nigel Kennedy, Jack Brymer, Gwen Catley, Felicity Lott and Paul Tortelier. We rehearse in West Hampstead every Wednesday and give at least three concerts a year, one of which sees us make a charitable donation usually in four figures, from our profits (we are a registered charity, so aim to break even each year). Last year we also held a ‘Tchaikathon’ which saw us play every Tchaikovsky symphony, in addition to ballet suites and operatic arias, in one day, to raise over £4000 for Cancer Research UK .
The recent history of the orchestra has seen the attainment of high standards of performance and the committee, of which I am a member, are currently making plans for our centenary year.
Tickets are £10, £8 concessions. Please call 07940 531407.
